Sart of Division of Genetic Information, Institute for Genome Research the University of Tokushima.

On April 9, 1998, Institute for Genome Research was founded in the University of Tokushima.  To start Functional Genomics and to identify the disease-susceptibility genes for "Common Diseases", Division of Genetic Information was started with two other Divisions including Div. of Molecular Functional Analysis and Div. of Genetic Experiment.

Otsuka Department of Clinical and Molecular Nutrition, and the succeeding Otsuka Department of Molecular Nutrition, both being the endowed departments are the root of Institute for Genome Research.

The root of Institute for Genome Research is the endowed department supported by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory Cooperation.  The first endowed department of the University of Tokushima named as  "Otsuka Department of Clinical and Molecular Nutrition" started from April 1, 1990 and lasted to March 31, 2002.  The succeeding endowed department renamed as "Otsuka Department of Molecular Nutrition" started from April 1, 1999 and ended on March 31, 2002.

For the initial 9 years and the succeeding 1 year totaling 10 years since April 1, 1990 to March 31, 1999, Professor Mitsuo Itakura was responsible for these departments.  Professor Mitsuo Itakura who was responsible for the first 8 years out of the total 10 years became equally responsible for the foundation of Institute for Genome Reserch for 2 years out of the total 10 years.  The last 2 years of the endowed department was ran by Professor Katsuhiko Yoshimoto since April 1, 1999 until March 31, 2001.

The idea of "Functional Genomics" started about March, 1987.

Because more than 2 years were necessary before stating Institute for Genome Research in April, 1998, the idea of "Institute for Genome Research with the aim at functional genomics " started about March, 1996.  Although functional genomics is now well accepted as one of the major research field after the completion of human genome project, the direction of our institute was as early as about 7 years ago.

One of the most important questions in the post-sequencing era is analysis of gene functions in vivo.   The University of Tokushima has been proposing the importance of Gene Function Analysis in vivo in the post-sequencing era.

Publications from Division of Genetic Information are presented in 12. publications, together with those from Otsuka Departments of Clinical and Molecular or Molecular Nutrion.

If there were not Endowed Department supported by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory Incorporation, Institute for Genome Research, the University of Tokushima had not been founded.  Because of this close relationship, the publications from the Endosed Department are recorded in this homepage with those from Division of Genetic Information, Institute for Genome Research.
